Common Man – South Wharf
39 Dukes Walk. South Wharf. Vic 3000. Ph: (03) 9696 3774 free wi-fi
Common Man is located along the banks of the Yarra River at South Wharf. Easily reached by public transport my No. 12 tram from Middle Park stopped conveniently at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. The walk along South Wharf allows you to not only take in the beauty of the city as seen from the river bank but also takes you past the historic ship, the Polly Woodside, which was built in Belfast in 1885.
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Common Man’s menu is a multicultural melting pot that guarantees to satisfy even the fussiest client. The $10 children’s menu is a creative one and includes a glass of fruit juice or soft drink with every meal. I chose the Quinoa Salad with fried chickpeas, roasted baby beets, butternut pumpkin, pepita seeds, goats curd, hazelnut & truffle mustard vinaigrette.
This was delicious and healthy, but also very satisfying. I’d recommend ordering this salad as a share plate though so you can enjoy something else from the menu as well.
Despite the large, open planned dining space, Common Man manages to make you feel very relaxed and almost ‘at home’. The decor has a vintage/retro feel and the feature wall is a thriving, lush vertical garden. The staff are professional, friendly and helpful, ensuring excellent service, and a happy work environment that is palpable.
Whether it’s an after work ‘aperitivo’, a quiet beer, or a really good meal, Common Man could quickly become your ‘home away from home’.
