The Kettle Black
50 Albert Road – South Melbourne – Melbourne Australia – (03) 9088 0721
When a restaurant owner recommends a restaurant he doesn’t own for breakfast, you know you’re not going to be disappointed. The first time I saw The Kettle Black, I actually walked past and thought that it was a place I really wanted to visit. The striking modern white exterior marries well with the traditional architecture of a terrace house. Team this with the coffee vendor out the front, The Kettle Black oozes a hip and happening must visit vibe.
When I followed my gps map to the recommended breakfast spot, I was pleasantly surprised that it was the same restaurant I’d walked past a couple of days earlier. Although you can sit outside, the restaurant inside is beautiful, light and spacious, with simple and modern décor. Our waitress was American and she was delightful. Service was attentive, and she was so helpful in going through the menu with us. I went for the basics and chose Avocado with toast and kelp salt, and washed it down with a very good caffè latte. I was also impressed to see the cake selection included healthy, raw and vegan options.
Available for private functions and events, The Kettle Black also provides an “exclusive and private dining experience” for up to 12 guests in the upper level of the terrace house, for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
I would have liked to return to The Kettle Black but alas my time in Melbourne was too short. I definitely recommend going there, whether it be for breakfast, brunch, lunch or a quick coffee & cake stop!
